Amanda Hess has written a brilliant piece about the re-emergence of public shaming using the tragic example of a father’s punishment of his daughter. For disobeying a house rule, he filmed his cutting off her hair, chastising her all the while, and posted it online. She was only 13, unable to deal with the humiliation, and she killed herself. The dude should go to prison for emotionally abuse his own child to the point she killed herself people like that are disgusting and dangerous.
Well, there’s a lot more to the story than what’s printed on this article. I started researching about this case because it sounded too sensational to be true, but indeed it is. The latest I read is that father won’t be charged because it was the daughter who posted the video on youtube. Though the father shouldn’t have recorded it, the daughter opened up a can of worms by posting it. It seemed as though she already had the support from friends and school staff. What her motivation was for posting it will not be known, but whatever her intentions, it obviously backfired.
